Fresh starts are the things of New Year resolutions but sooner or later we discover we have slipped back into old ways again. The Apostle Paul makes it clear that when someone becomes a Christian, by receiving Christ, something changes. An exchange is made.
Unlike in the pantomime Aladdin, the old lamp was being sought because of its power and a new lamp was offered in exchange which was powerless. Jesus offers us a way of disposing of our old powerless life in favour of a new life with access to His power.
Once we make that choice we need to live in the new life and not keep settling for our old one or indeed justifying our behaviour because of our past circumstances. Let’s learn to live in the full potential of our new life. This also means having the courage to take up His call to new things.
